The Red Feather Quilt

The #redfeatherquilt is a collaborative project in the quilting community across Canada to raise awareness of the tragedy of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. This project was started by Erin (@cozy.chloe.creations), who was inspired by the “REDress Project” which uses haunting displays of red dresses to symbolize the Missing women. You can read more about Erin’s journey with this project on her blog.

How can you help?

Make a block!

Maker:S,Date:2017-9-20,Ver:6,Lens:Kan03,Act:Lar02,E-Y

We are using Anna Maria Horner’s free Feather Bed Pattern (pdf), with AMH’s blessing. We’re looking for red feathers on a black background. Feathers can be paired or individual. Please share your blocks on social media using the hashtags #redfeatherproject and #redfeatherquilt to help raise awareness. Bring your finished blocks to show & share at your guild meetings. We’re working on getting a mailing address that we can post publicly to streamline things. In the meantime, email me for the mailing address for your blocks, as well as any extra black fabric you’d like to contribute to the background, backing, and binding.

Buy a Quilt!

*watch this space for updates on upcoming auctions*

Quilt #3 is in progress — what do you think of our mock-ups above? The quilt will be donated to the Native Women’s Association of Canada for auction at their Annual General Assembly in September 2018.

Quilt #2 is on its way to the Women of Wisdom program at Skookum Jim Friendship Centre in Whitehorse.

Quilt #1 was raffled to raise $50 for Walking with Our Sisters, and $500 to Awo Taan Healing Lodge

We will keep making quilts as long as people make blocks. With all the generosity in the quilting community, it would be lovely to get over 600 blocks for the over 600 missing women.

  1. Excellent way to promote awareness of missing and murdered indigenous women! I will share word of this important initiative both in person with my quilt group and as well as on social media.

  2. Do you have to be Canadian to contribute? I live in Michigan and have relatives who are Canadian.

  3. This is a great idea, and I hope I can make a block to donate soon. I do believe you’d raise more funds if you ran the auctions in locations where there are more quilters with more $$’s to spend on raffle tickets (and the extra quilts could be donated to the families of the missing indigenous women as a gesture of solidarity)

    1. Hi Krupa, I have a large number of blocks that have been waiting to become a quilt. I’m making it a priority to pick this back up this spring.

  4. ♥️…
In support of missing women and children, I myself would like to participate in and share in an awareness and positive change, protecting all those in need.🐞
